Neat Satellite Photo of NY Land and NY Adirondack Mountains

Here's a neat satellite photo showing NY land and the NY Adirondack mountains from space in late fall of 2009. If you click on the photo, there's also a nice short explanation of the geologic history of the NY Adirondacks and its cousin to the east, the Green Mountains in Vermont. The photo also clearly shows veins of evergreen forest, now that the leaves of surrounding deciduous forest have fallen. North of the Adirondack mountains is the St. Lawrence Valley, the rich northerly drainage basin of the Adirondack mountains where water eventually makes it way towards the St. Lawrence River and then out to the Atlantic Ocean. In this satellite photo, one can clearly see that the St. Lawrence Valley is characterized by three long east-west "strips" of land:

• Furthest south, a thin belt of agricultural land just above the northern edge of the Adirondack mountains, which runs along Route 11, connecting Malone, Potsdam, and Canton and appearing mostly yellow and gold in the photo.
• In the middle, a thick vein of non-agricultural New York forest land and primarily centered around the 22,000 acre Brasher State Forest, which may be a little easier to see on this map here.
• At the northern edge of New York, another belt of mostly agricultural land in New York's St. Lawrence Valley that ends at the St. Lawrence River.
